Good Evening Everyone!
Do we actually need less sleep? Well, it depends on how heavy you want to be. In a report by CNN, sleep time was studied on how it affects genetic vs. environmental influences over weight gain. The results were interesting: those who get under 7 hours of sleep per night can attribute 70% of weight trouble to genetic reasons.... and those who get 9 or more hours of sleep per night can attribute only 32% of weight trouble to genetics.
There's some science to the explanation of that, but it's kinda boring. So let's just skip to the take home message from this CNN report:
Take Home Message: If you get 9+ hours of sleep per night, you will have more control over your body's ability to gain weight. If you sleep less than 7 hours, then you are leaving your body's weight gain up to the genes from your ancestors.
*I'm more of a control freak, so if it was up to me (which it's not right now with our new addition at home:), I would get the extra sleep so that I could have more control.
Yours in Health,
Dr. Jeff

I have heard this before. Problem is I cannot sleep straight through so I am at my genes' mercy!
