Kids need chiropractic? Your crazy Dr. Jeff!

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Do kids need chiropractic care?  Well you probably know my answer to that question, so I am going to let you decide for yourself by reading about one of my patients below:

Before coming to see me this patient was diagnosed with "severe chronic migraines," and was prescribed a very strong migraine medication.  This patient was not that different from any other patient ....normal bumps on the head, slips & falls, but otherwise very good health.   However, the patient did suffer from heat stroke in the summer while enjoying outdoor activity (this stress was the probable trigger to the cause that you will read about below).  Ever since that point, this patient has been having chronic severe migraines.  So I guess the diagnosis was right....?  No!  After examination, I realized that this patient's servere migraines were a result of having subluxations (bones out of place, putting pressure on nerves) in the cervical and thoracic spine.  The most noteable was a subluxation in a vertebra at the top of neck called the "atlas."

Having misalignment in the "atlas" is known in chiropractic to cause mild to severe headaches (also other conditions, but we can talk about that another time).  A series of spinal adjustments was the recommended course of care and ever since the first adjustment, this patient did not complain of any more migraine headaches (note: she was having a severe headache 2x a week at this point).  As a result, the patient does not have to be on a strong migraine medication (which can cause some very serious side effects).

The reason why I have described this specific patient's case is that the patient is only 5 years old!  Because of examples like this, I have formed my opinion; which is that kids do need and benefit from chiropractic care.  My hope for you after reading this is that you have strengthened your opinion on kids needing chiropractic or I have changed your mind in that you will now consider that kids need chiropractic care.  So in closing this week, I ask that you please recommend to the parents of any child suffering from headaches, muskuloskeletal pain or some other injury to at least consult a chiropractor about the condition.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Jeff

Occational Headaches are Normal. WHAT!!!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

All too often, I ask my patients if they get headaches and here is the usual reply:  "Yes, about 1-2 a week but that's just normal."  And I say:  WHAT!!!  Headaches everyday or just once a year are not normal!  They are common, but not normal.  There is a cause to everything that we are feeling and headaches are not the exception.  The headaches that chiropractic most commonly helps with are called cervicogenic or tension headaches.  Tension headaches usual start in the neck and wrap around or over top to the front of the head.  Chiropractic also helps with certain migraines, cluster and or chronic daily headaches.
As to how common headaches are, here is a quote from the question and answer section of the WHO (World Health Organization) website:
 "Q: How common are headaches?
A: Headaches are extremely common. The most common type of headache is the "Tension Type Headache". Available data suggest that in developed countries, Tension Type Headache affects two-thirds of men and over 80% of women. Less well recognized is the toll of the chronic daily headache: up to one adult in 20 has a headache every – or nearly every – day."
So if you are having frequent or just occational headaches, please let us know so that we can help you get to the CAUSE of the headache.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Jeff

--One last thing....You do NOT have headaches because of your body having a lack of tylenol or some other headache medication.

A Fishy Follow-up

Good Afternoon Everyone!

A couple of weeks ago I spoke about good fats vs. bad fats.  I had a request to go into a little better detail as to all of the benefits of taking a good fish oil or omega-3 oil.  Well here are all of the benefits:

1)  Helps cells to function optimally. (Better cells results in a better you!)

2)  Helps reduce the chance of heart and artery disease by lowering inflammation througout the entire body (even in the arteries themselves).  What they know about plaque build up in arteries is that it takes two ingredients to make plaque.  The first is bad cholesterol and the second is inflammation (which happens mostly as a result of our American diet).   If we can reduce the inflammation, then the cholesterol will have a tough time binding together to form plaque.
-Less inflammation also means less pain in the joints and muskuloskeletal system

3)  Helps increase good cholesterol (HDL) which in turn helps to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and therefor is another way to help reduce the risk of heart disease.

So now lets talk about what to look for in a fish oil.  This oil should have a proper ratio of 2:1 when looking at EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) to DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) on the back label.  The oil that I use in the office and for myself personally has a ratio of 600mg EPA to 300mg DHA.  The oil is also highly filtered from all contaminates such as heavy metals.  So if you are even thinking of buying fish oil as a supplement, please go to either a health food store or you can purchase through our office (price is usually about the same).

Dr. Jeff
