Good Afternoon Everyone!
That's right everyone....The research is in and old Abe is Neurotoxic (not Abe himself, but the coin that his face is stamped on)! According to an article that I just reviewed, copper ( i.e. the penny) and iron can be toxic to our health (causing diseases of aging). Both of these metals are essential for us to survive, but become dangerous at higher levels. Aging diseases which include Alzheimer's (and other neurological diseases), arteriosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and others can be increased by having excess copper and iron. This article reported that the population in the highest 5th of copper intake loses cognition at 3 times the normal rate.
So how do we minimize copper and iron toxicity? Well according to the article, we get most of our copper and iron from these sources: Drinking water, Red Meat, Processed Meat, Shell Fish, and supplements containing copper/iron. So reducing shell fish, red meat and processed meat helps, but the largest source seems to come from our drinking water. To minimize this, a reverse osmosis device can be installed on the tap used for drinking and colling water. Lastly, you can lower the risks of free copper and iron by choosing supplements/vitamins that do not have these metals in them. Iron supplementation should be for those who are anemic only.
