Since being a kid, I've always understood from the dentist that eating too much sugar is bad for my teeth and can lead to having cavities. This seems to be a basic fact that is understood by most (if not all) people. One thing (among many) that I didn't know as a kid was what STRESS can do to the body. Now as a chiropractor, I see STRESS to be just as bad for spine as sugar is for the teeth. Stress can cause subluxation in the spine (kind of like cavities for the teeth). Subluxation is when a vertebra or series of vertebrae are out of alignment and or not moving properly.
Just like a cavity in a tooth, a subluxation in the spine can result in other conditions. Some examples are: pain, inflammation, poor posture, accelerated arthritis, degenerated discs, disc herniations, headaches, neck pain, low back pain, sciatica...just to name a few. One additional effect is that a subluxation of the spine can interfere with nerve flow to the body (not just parts you can feel, but also parts that you can't feel ....such as all of your internal organs). This nerve interference can result in an overall poor health (this happens as the nerve interference affects how the brain communicates with the body).
Take Home Message:
1) Sugar --> cavities --> tooth decay (and resulting conditions)
2) Stress --> spinal subluxation --> Nerve interference (overall poor health), pain, inflammation, poor posture, accelerated arthritis, degenerated discs, disc herniations, headaches, neck pain, low back pain, sciatica...just to name a few
So make sure to get your spine checked for subluxation (aka: spinal cavities) if you've been going through a large amount of stress. Also, please pass this message along to any loved ones that you think have too much stress in their life.
